Starshock: Alpha

Starshock is a game that takes place in a space station, the Nath-Satyendra research facility. Terrible things are happening and you are a survivor.

The game isn't Duke Nukem, you do not run around shooting monsters like there's no tomorrow because if you die, you die. You have to utilize your tools; every single credit, every single mine, every single bullet and the environment. There are message terminals to provide information about the station and provide stories of survivors to help you immerse with the game. There's nothing useless, it doesn't remind you that you are playing a game - you are a survivor of a disaster, and you want to stay as one

What is going on? First the tremors from the lower levels, now the lights going out- wait, is someone screaming? Oh dear, seems there's some sort of trouble out there. I'll go see if I can help.

Make sure that you read the terminals throughout the demo

About this build

An archival restoration of Evrim / quarry and Stefan / mrmotarius's Starshock, rewritten in Rust with wgpu. Practically the same simulation, maps, renderer, and original assets now run in a browser through WebAssembly.

The recovered campaign is sadly unfinished: the fifth sector has no teleporter and the sixth contains no placed encounters. We did not substitute new levels or ending. I'm currently working on recovering the Lost Levels, alas...

Requires a browser with WebGL/WebGPU support, which is more common than one that can run Java applets, these days!

The Rust/WebAssembly restoration code and the modern effects layer were written with ChatGPT 6 Astra, with Claude Opus 5.5 assisting on fixing broken graphical effects. The art, maps, sounds, music and text are the original 2013 assets by Stefan / mrmotarius.

A game by quarry and mrmotarius.
